The Pump Isn't What You Think It Is
Here's the thing about forearm pump: it feels like a finger problem, but it's often a whole-body problem wearing a finger-shaped disguise.
When your forearms blow up on a route, your brain immediately blames grip strength. But pump is the result of sustained muscular contraction restricting blood flow — and the amount of grip force you actually need to hold a given hold is heavily influenced by everything else happening in your body at the same time.
If your core is sagging, you're compensating through your arms. If your hips are swinging away from the wall, your hands are working overtime to keep you on. If you're holding your breath through the crux, your muscles are starving for oxygen before you've even made the hard move. In each of these scenarios, your forearms are picking up the slack for a system that's leaking tension in all the wrong places.
Elite climbers don't have magic fingers. They have bodies that waste almost nothing.
What the Research Actually Suggests
Studies on climbing performance have consistently shown that grip endurance — not raw grip strength — is one of the stronger predictors of climbing ability. But here's where it gets interesting: grip endurance is massively affected by how efficiently you move between holds.
A climber who rests on every hold, breathes deliberately, and maintains body tension throughout a sequence will have dramatically better endurance than a climber with stronger fingers who rushes, grips harder than necessary, and forgets to exhale. Run This Quick Assessment on Yourself
Before your next session, pick a route or boulder problem you can do but find uncomfortable — something in the range where you're working but not failing. Climb it once at your normal pace. Then ask yourself these questions:
Where do you feel it first? If the answer is always your forearms before anything else, that's a signal. Climbers with well-rounded conditioning tend to feel fatigue distributed more broadly — legs, core, shoulders — not concentrated in the forearms.
What's your breathing doing? Most climbers hold their breath through hard sequences without realizing it. Try climbing the same route while consciously exhaling on every move. If your endurance noticeably improves, you've found a bottleneck that has nothing to do with your fingers.
What do your hips look like? Film yourself from the side. If your hips are consistently far from the wall, you're pulling with your arms to compensate for poor hip engagement. That's a core and movement problem, not a grip problem.
How hard are you actually gripping? On holds that don't require full crimping force, are you still white-knuckling? Over-gripping is one of the most common and most fixable causes of early pump.
What Elite Climbers Actually Train
Spend time watching how serious climbers train — not what they post about, but what they actually do — and you'll notice a few things. Yes, they hangboard. But they also spend serious time on movement drills, quiet feet practice, and deliberate route reading. They work on body positioning obsessively. They practice falling so they're not tensing up in fear before every hard move.
Many top coaches now structure training programs that treat finger strength as a single component within a much larger system. Mobility work, antagonist training for shoulder health, breathing drills, and tactical climbing sessions all make the list before more hangboard volume gets added.
The athletes who respond best to training aren't the ones who can crimp the hardest in isolation. They're the ones who can apply appropriate force at the right moment, stay relaxed everywhere else, and move efficiently enough that their fingers never have to work harder than necessary.
So What Should You Actually Do?
None of this means you should abandon finger training. If you're newer to climbing, building baseline tendon strength is genuinely important and takes years of patient loading. Hangboarding has real value, especially once you've got a few years under your harness.
But if you've been climbing for a while and you're stuck, the answer is almost never more hangboard volume. Here's where to look instead:
- Core tension drills: Try hollow body holds and front lever progressions. If you can't maintain tension off the wall, you definitely can't maintain it on it.
- Deliberate breathing practice: Pick an easy route and focus entirely on exhaling through hard moves. Do this for a full session and see what shifts.
- Silent feet training: Climb with a deliberate effort to place your feet without any sound. Precise footwork reduces the load on your hands more than almost any other single skill.
- Video review: Film yourself regularly. Movement inefficiencies are almost impossible to feel in the moment but painfully obvious on replay.
Your fingers might be the ones screaming at you, but they're usually just the last ones to complain. Fix the system, and your fingers will follow.
